Individual Therapy

Individual counselling, known as psychotherapy or individual therapy, commences by establishing a collaborative relationship between you and your counselor.  Therapy offers a non-judgmental and confidential space for you to share safely, receiving objective feedback and tools for support.

I have extensive knowledge and experience with:
Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest or pleasure in activities. As a counsellor, I possess in-depth knowledge of the various factors that contribute to depression, including biological, psychological, and environmental influences. I am experienced in utilizing evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), and mindfulness-based approaches to help individuals manage symptoms, challenge negative thought patterns, and regain a sense of well-being.
Anxiety disorders involve excessive worry, fear, and apprehension that can interfere with daily functioning. With expertise in anxiety management, I employ a range of therapeutic techniques, including relaxation training, exposure therapy, and cognitive restructuring, to help individuals alleviate symptoms and develop effective coping strategies. I also provide psycho-education to help clients understand the underlying mechanisms of anxiety and empower them to take control of their mental health.
Effective communication and conflict resolution are essential for healthy relationships. Drawing from my training and experience, I help individuals and couples improve their communication skills, assertiveness, and active listening abilities. Through role-playing exercises, conflict resolution strategies, and empathetic dialogue, clients learn to express their needs and concerns constructively, negotiate differences, and cultivate greater understanding and harmony in their relationships.
BPD is a complex mental health condition characterized by intense emotions, unstable self-image, and turbulent interpersonal relationships. With specialized training in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based approaches, I assist individuals with BPD in developing emotion regulation skills, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance techniques. I provide a supportive and validating environment for clients to explore their emotions, identify maladaptive patterns, and work towards greater stability and self-awareness.
Stress is a natural response to life’s challenges, but chronic stress can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health. I offer practical strategies for stress management, including relaxation techniques, time management skills, and boundary setting. By helping clients identify sources of stress and develop coping mechanisms, I empower them to reduce stress levels, improve resilience, and enhance overall well-being.
Relationship abuse, whether emotional, physical, or sexual, can have devastating consequences for individuals and families. With expertise in trauma-informed care and domestic violence intervention, I provide support and advocacy for survivors of abuse. I help clients recognize abusive dynamics, explore safety planning options, and access resources for healing and recovery. Through empowerment-based approaches, I assist survivors in reclaiming their autonomy and rebuilding their lives free from violence.
Survivors of sexual assault and abuse often face profound psychological and emotional challenges. As a trauma-informed therapist, I offer compassionate support and validation for survivors as they navigate their healing journey. I utilize evidence-based therapies such as trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), narrative therapy, and mindfulness techniques to help survivors process their experiences, manage symptoms of trauma, and restore a sense of safety and empowerment.
Anger is a natural emotion, but when it becomes overwhelming or uncontrollable, it can lead to destructive behaviours and strained relationships. With expertise in anger management, I help individuals understand the underlying triggers and dynamics of their anger. Through cognitive-behavioural techniques, relaxation exercises, and assertiveness training, clients learn to identify and express their emotions in healthy ways, manage anger triggers, and foster constructive communication and conflict resolution skills.

Couples

Navigating the complexities of relationships can be challenging, and it’s not uncommon for couples to encounter obstacles along the way. Whether it’s difficulty in communication, unresolved conflicts, or deeper emotional wounds, seeking support can be a pivotal step towards healing and rebuilding your connection.

As a relationship counsellor, I understand that reaching out for help can feel daunting, and I want to assure you that seeking support doesn’t mean you’ve reached a point of no return. Instead, it signifies a commitment to nurturing and strengthening your relationship.

Many couples I work with have already made valiant efforts to address their issues independently before deciding to seek professional guidance. I’m here to offer a fresh perspective and provide the tools and support needed to revitalize your relationship.

Drawing from my training in the Gottman Method and Dr. Sue Johnson’s Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, I offer evidence-based approaches that are grounded in decades of research and proven effectiveness. These methodologies focus on enhancing communication, deepening emotional connection, and fostering mutual understanding and respect.

The Gottman Method emphasizes the importance of building friendship, managing conflict constructively, and creating shared meaning in relationships. Through structured exercises and interventions, couples learn practical skills to strengthen their bond and navigate challenges with greater ease.

Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, explores the emotional underpinnings of relationship dynamics and seeks to create secure attachment bonds between partners. By identifying and addressing unmet emotional needs and attachment patterns, couples can cultivate greater intimacy and resilience in their relationship.

In our sessions together, I provide a supportive and non-judgmental space for couples to explore their concerns, express their needs, and work towards common goals. Whether you’re facing communication breakdowns, unresolved conflicts, or feelings of disconnect, I’m here to help you rebuild trust, foster connection, and create a relationship that thrives.

Remember, seeking support is a courageous step towards creating the relationship you desire. With dedication, openness, and guidance, I believe that every couple has the potential to rediscover joy, intimacy, and fulfillment in their partnership.

Supervision

As an Approved Clinical Supervisor accredited by the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), I provide invaluable support and guidance to my fellow counsellors and therapists. In this role, I offer a collaborative and confidential space where you can explore ethical dilemmas, brainstorm solutions to challenging cases, and debrief the complexities of your work.

Navigating the field of counselling and therapy can be both rewarding and demanding, and having a trusted supervisor to turn to can make all the difference. Whether you’re facing ethical quandaries, feeling uncertain about the direction of a client’s treatment, or simply seeking a sounding board to process your experiences, I’m here to provide insight, perspective, and support.

Through our supervision sessions, we’ll work together to unpack challenging situations, consider alternative approaches, and develop strategies to enhance your effectiveness as a clinician. Drawing from my own clinical experience and expertise, I offer practical guidance and evidence-based interventions tailored to your unique professional development needs.

I believe that supervision is not just about problem-solving; it’s also about fostering a culture of reflection, growth, and self-care. By creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment, I aim to empower you to navigate the complexities of your work with confidence and resilience.

Whether you’re a seasoned therapist looking to deepen your skills or a newly licensed counsellor navigating your first cases, I’m committed to supporting you every step of the way. Together, we’ll embark on a journey of professional development and personal growth, ensuring that you feel equipped and empowered to make a meaningful difference in the lives of your clients.

Critical Incident Stress Management

Experiencing a traumatic event can have profound effects on individuals and communities, and having access to timely and supportive interventions is crucial for healing and resilience. As a dedicated member of the Central Kootenay Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team since 2007, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of Critical Incident Stress Defusing (CISD) in facilitating the recovery process for those affected by traumatic events.

CISD provides individuals with a structured opportunity to process their experiences, emotions, and reactions in the immediate aftermath of a critical incident. Through facilitated discussions and psychoeducation, participants are supported in understanding their reactions, normalizing their responses, and accessing resources for coping and support. This early intervention can help mitigate the long-term psychological effects of trauma and promote adaptive coping strategies.

At New Chapter CISM Team, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism in critical incident response. Each member of our team has undergone rigorous training through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and brings decades of experience working with first responders and other professionals in the Central Kootenay area.

In the event of a traumatic incident at your worksite or within your community, our team stands ready to provide timely and compassionate support. We understand the unique needs of different organizations and can tailor our interventions to meet the specific needs of your team. Whether it’s a Critical Incident Stress Defusing (CISD), debriefing, or ongoing support, we are here to assist you every step of the way.

As a registered team with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (Team #2369), you can trust that our interventions are grounded in evidence-based practices and delivered with professionalism and empathy. If your worksite has experienced a traumatic event, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Together, we can navigate the challenges of trauma and foster a path towards healing and resilience for your team.
